Benefits Info now available via WhatsApp

People can now access the most up-to-date benefits and support information via their smart phones, using WhatsApp.

Simply send ‘Hi’ in a WhatsApp message to:

The service includes information on benefits support available, how to check eligibility and how to apply.

It has been launched to help combat the spread of incorrect information and to make the correct information easily accessible.

Good news for vulnerable people in Suffolk who need help during the COVID-19 pandemic

A new Suffolk-focused community service has been set up to support people who need help during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Called ‘Home, but not alone’, the service has been launched to help connect people who want to volunteer in their communities with neighbours who are most in need.

and will be staffed from 9am to 5pm, 7x days a week.

Home, but not alone

DWP Update:

DWP have said “where awards are due to expire, we will be extending end-dates so that claimants continue to receive financial support at their current rate during this period”    so you do not need to worry about your PIP/DLA/AA etc. ending during this time.          The DWP will automatically extend your end date.

Benefit reviews and reassessments suspended

Reviews and reassessments for all disability benefits are being suspended for the next three months.

This includes 

  • Universal Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

H.M Government Advice – 23rd March 2020

The Prime Minister has said you will only be able to leave your house for one of 4 reasons:

  1. Shopping for necessities
  2. Once a day for exercise
  3. Medical need or providing care
  4. Travelling to or from work (if you can’t work from home – keyworkers)

We urge you to observe this advice strictly – please do not put yourselves or others at risk. 


The Department for work and Pensions (DWP) are cancelling all face-to-face appointments for assessments until 17th June. If you have been given an appointment before this date, you should not attend .

The DWP will be issuing further information/advice at a later date.

If you have a benefit-related form that is due back to the DWP: 

  • please call them and explain that you cannot access appropriate advice at the moment as we are closed; in line with government directions (23rd March 2020).
  • be clear that you are a vulnerable client, because of your disability, and need our advice and help to complete the form 
  • ask for an extension – although at this present time we cannot say exactly when we will be able to see clients – and we will try our very best to see you once we are able to reopen

Helping over 1,000 people a year.

Each year we help over 1,000 people with disabilities, their carers and families.

We get over 6,000 inquiries a year. We help people with their problems and issues and regularly help clients claim over £2m in benefits they are entitled to. This also contributes to the local economy in the Suffolk Coastal area.

We are part-funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and the remainder by the generosity of local councils, charities and individuals who have been helped by DAS and by the dedication of our volunteers. We need to raise £184,000 per year to keep our service going and any contributions help, including donations via Local Giving.

Our customer satisfaction surveys show consistently high levels of satisfaction. We are always ready to listen to ideas for improvement from our customers and volunteers.

We cannot give medical, debt or legal advice, but we can refer you to other agencies to help you with these issues.
